Homemade Flour Tortillas
Servings: 8 10in Tortillas
Ingredients
- 3 Cups All-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Baking powder
- 6 tbsp Butter
- 1 cup Warm water
Instructions
Preparing
- In a large bowl, use a whisk to incorporate the flour, salt, and baking powder. This is important, you don't want to get a chunk of sour baking powder in your first bite!
- Throw in chunks of butter and work it through the flour with your hands until it's all incorporated and has a soft crumb-like texture
- Make a well in the middle of your flour/butter mixture and pour the warm water.
- With a greased mixing utensil, mix until the dough starts to come together.
- Then, use your hands to knead into a ball. Just a minute is all it takes.
- Cut the ball in half, the two sides in half, and then the four pieces in half. That should get you 8 roughly even pieces.
- Roll into balls and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Cooking
- Preheat a pan on medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of butter or cooking oil
- use oil to grease two pieces of parchment paper. You will sandwich your dough rounds between these two pieces to roll them out.
- Sandwich your dough round between the parchment pieces where the greased sides are touching the dough ball.
- Gently roll out the ball, keeping it as round as possible between the parchment pieces.
- The key here is to get it very thin and greased well. You can then peel off one side of parchment paper and start to peel off the rolled out tortilla in your hands over the pan and throw it in.
- Be close to the pan when you peel it off and put it straight in. Cook for 2.5 minutes and flip. Cook an additional 2.5 minutes.
- You will keep your parchment pieces and repeat for the rest. Add more oil to the parchment as needed.
- Cook all 8 tortillas and enjoy! I love using these with my fajita recipe, you can find it linked below!
